Anchored In Christ
In a time marked by spiritual confusion and experience-driven worship, the distinct voice of confessional Lutheranism is often lost amid the noise of modern evangelical culture. Many—even lifelong Christians—have never encountered the biblical clarity, theological depth, and enduring comfort offered by the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Anchored in Christ exists to bridge that gap. This podcast presents the core teachings of confessional Lutheranism in a format that’s both engaging and accessible. Through thoughtful conversation, scriptural teaching, and real-life application, Anchored in Christ introduces listeners to the unique theological and pastoral strengths of the LCMS. It’s not just another Christian podcast—it’s a clear, compassionate, and uncompromising proclamation of Christ crucified for sinners, set against the backdrop of today’s theological trends. ⸻ Why It Matters The LCMS has long been committed to faithfully confessing the Gospel, but its distinctiveness is often misunderstood or overlooked—especially in a landscape shaped by the influence of big-box churches and decision-centered spirituality. Anchored in Christ invites listeners to rediscover what makes Lutheran theology both rich and deeply comforting: • The centrality of Word and Sacrament in worship • The assurance of a Christ-centered faith, not rooted in personal decision but divine promise • The historical and biblical grounding of doctrines such as justification, vocation, and the means of grace Whether you’re a disillusioned evangelical, a curious seeker, or a lifelong Lutheran looking to go deeper, this podcast offers a fresh, faithful voice grounded in something far older than today’s trends. ⸻ What to Expect Each episode of Anchored in Christ features clear teaching, honest reflection, and accessible conversations rooted in Lutheran theology. Alongside co-hosts Doug Hannah and Rev. Curt Hoover, you’ll hear from pastors, theologians, and lay leaders as they explore how the Gospel speaks into modern questions with ancient wisdom and lasting hope. This is more than just theological talk—it’s a call back to biblical, sacramental, Christ-centered faith. A faith that’s not built on hype or emotion, but on the enduring promises of God.

Why are young men suddenly flocking back to historic, traditional Christianity?
In this episode of Anchored in Christ, Pastor Curt Hoover and Doug Hannah dive into a trend they noticed in their own channel data: a massive wave of young men (ages 15 to 44) tuning in. They explore why modern "skinny jeans" church culture is failing men, the crucial difference between a man’s "rights" and a man’s "responsibilities," and a fascinating theological "what if" about Adam, Eve, and the Fall.
This isn't just a podcast about masculinity—it's a direct call to action for fathers, grandfathers, and young men to step up as the heads of their households and reclaim their role as the primary teachers of the faith.
Plus, Pastor Curt issues a direct, urgent challenge to the young men listening regarding a critical shortage in the church today.
📞 A Direct Message from Pastor Kurt
Young men, the church needs you, and your family needs you. If you want to talk about your responsibilities, the future of the church, or what it looks like to step up, Pastor Kurt wants to hear from you directly.

In this episode of Anchored in Christ, Doug Hannah and Pastor Curt Hoover dive into the Lord’s Prayer as they continue their walk through the Six Chief Parts of Luther’s Small Catechism.
If you’ve ever felt like you "aren’t good at praying," struggle with staying focused, or feel guilty because you don't have a picture-perfect "prayer closet," this conversation is for you. We break down the heavy American assumption that prayer is a performance or an emotional monologue meant to change God's mind. Instead, we look at the liberating truth of the Gospel: prayer is a gift, an invitation into an ongoing dialogue with our heavenly Father, and a space where the Holy Spirit is already constantly interceding for us perfectly.
Stop hustling for God, pull up a chair, and learn what it means to simply rest in the perfect prayer Jesus gave us.

Who is doing the verbs when it comes to your faith?
In modern American church culture, we are often told that faith is a cooperative effort—that God made the arrangements, but it’s up to you to "walk through the door" or conjure up enough emotional strength to sustain your belief. But is that what the Bible actually teaches?
In this episode of Anchored in Christ, Doug Hannah and Pastor Curt Hoover dive back into the blueprints of the Christian faith via Luther’s Small Catechism, specifically focusing on the Third Article of the Apostles' Creed: The Holy Spirit.
Together, they challenge the "consumerism" and "individualism" of the modern church, revealing why the Holy Spirit’s true work is radically different from the loud, emotional spectacles we've been conditioned to expect. From the way our church architecture is designed to teach, to the physical reality of the "Means of Grace" (Word and Sacrament), discover the deep, liberating comfort of extra nos—the truth that salvation is entirely outside of yourself. Because Jesus isn't your life coach; He's your Savior.

Is the Bible a list of "marching orders" to follow, or is it something deeper? Most people look at the Ten Commandments as a ladder to climb—believing that if we just "do our best," God will fill in the gaps.

In this episode of Anchored in Christ, Doug Hannah and Pastor Curt Hoover dive into why that "self-help" approach to Christianity actually misses the point of the Gospel entirely.
In this episode, we discuss:
The Law as a Mirror: Why the Ten Commandments weren't given to show us how "good" we are, but to show us how much we need a Savior.
The "Two Tables": Breaking down our vertical relationship with God and our horizontal relationship with our neighbors.
Casual Christianity: Why the modern "God is my buddy" mindset loses the sense of the Holy Space Moses experienced at the burning bush.
The "Stupid Idiot" Translation: A candid look at St. Paul’s blunt warnings to the Galatians (and us) about the dangers of human pride.
"The point is the forgiveness of sins. You don't get that unless you understand that you are a sinner. Embrace your sinfulness, because then there is a Savior." — Pastor Curt Hoover

Back to the Basics: The Ten Commandments (Part 1)
Are we living the way we were actually designed to live? In this episode, we kick off a brand-new 12-part series exploring the foundations of the Christian faith. We’re going "back to the basics" by walking through the Small Catechism, a document that has served as a roadmap for believers for centuries.
We begin with the Ten Commandments. Often viewed as a rigid list of "dos and don'ts," we discuss how these "ten words" are actually a design manual for human flourishing—or as one children's book put it, a guide to "Be Happy God's Way."
Pastor Curt Hoover joins us to break down the "Honesty of the Law." We look at the three ways the Law functions in our lives:
The Curb: Restraining evil and maintaining order in the world.
The Mirror: Showing us the honest, sometimes painful reality of our own hearts and our need for a Savior.
The Guide: Showing us what a life lived in harmony with God’s design actually looks like.
Join us as we discuss why you can’t fully appreciate the "Sweet Relief" of the Gospel until you've reckoned with the diagnosis of the Law.

From the "liturgy of space" in church architecture to the hidden baggage of AI and smartphones, Doug and Curt explore why physical presence matters more than ever in a digital age. They also tackle a major "hot take": Is online church actually 99% harmful?

Is the American Church operating more like a business than a ministry? In this episode of Anchored in Christ, Doug Hannah sits down with Pastor Curt Hoover to discuss a recent journey through the changing spiritual landscape of Europe. From the "pre-revival" atmosphere of France to the lean, truth-focused radio stations of Germany, Doug shares a convicting realization: the Gospel isn't just for the "unchurched"—it’s for the people sitting in the pews every single week.
We often hear that "preaching to the choir" is a waste of time. But if the choir is starving for the true message of Law and Gospel, what happens to the Church? Join us as we explore the "insidious" nature of American religious complacency, the danger of "Jesus + my good deeds," and why a return to historic orthodoxy and the sacraments is the only prescription for a lonely, isolated culture.

Is there more to Christianity than "Happy Clappy" worship and motivational TED talks?
In this episode of Anchored in Christ, hosts Doug Hannah and Pastor Curt Hoover sit down with a very special guest, Pastor Joshua Schooping, to discuss a spiritual journey that goes against the modern grain.
While many Christians in North America are currently being drawn toward the ancient traditions of Eastern Orthodoxy, Pastor Joshua actually came the other way. After growing up in "low-church" Evangelicalism and seeking more substance in the emergent church movement, he eventually became an Eastern Orthodox priest.
But the journey didn't end there.
Join us for Part 1 of this fascinating conversation as we explore:
The "empty calories" of modern Evangelicalism and why it's leaving young men restless.
The allure of Eastern Orthodox mysticism, history, and the "Jesus Prayer."
Why the "bubble began to burst" during Orthodox seminary.
The vital distinction between Law and Gospel that finally provided the "Fire of Freedom."
If you’ve ever felt like your faith was missing historical roots or doctrinal depth, this episode is for you.
